The Changing Man by Tomi Oyemakinde is his debut thriller and tells of a teenage girl, who is cajoled by curiosity into discovering the truth behind her boarding school’s decades-old legend.
Just because they let you in, it doesn’t mean they’ll let you out!!
Seventeen-year-old Ife gains a place at Nithercott School through its prestigious Urban Achievers Program. Almost immediately she realises, too late, that she’ll never fit in. While roving its echoing halls, she is bombarded by cruel taunts from the students and diminished by the teachers’ patronising attitude.
Eventually, she is thrown into detention, seemingly for the foreseeable future! Luckily she meets Ben, a troublemaker with an irritatingly cute smile, and they form an alliance. Both have their own reasons for needing to escape Nithercott. Ben needs to find his brother, who is missing, and no one else is the least bit interested in finding him!
Ife realises it’s just another weird constituent of a school that doesn’t care a jot about its students. As more and more people begin to go missing, including one of Ife’s only friends, she begins to feel threatened herself. Her fear increases when she sees a strange figure lurking in the shadows of the halls.
It looks weirdly like herself!!
Can the fantastical urban legend that flows through the school like mist be true?. . . the legend of the Changing Man?
A wonderfully intriguing read that twists and turns through a labyrinth full of fearful surprises and anticipation that ends in mayhem as the truth is uncovered.
Reminiscent of scenes from “Dr Who”, the suspenseful narrative will keep the reader on the edge of their seat and fearful for Ife and Ben until the very end.
The Changing Man is a definite must-read for lovers of this genre!
