We Are The Brennans by Tracey Lange is a novel about family and the secrets you keep FROM them, but also the secrets you keep FOR them.
Five years ago Sunday Brennan walked out on her family with no explanation, also leaving behind her beloved high school best friend and sweetheart.
Now 29 years old and living in Los Angeles, she decides to return to them after waking badly injured following a drunk driving accident that she has caused. Her life has reached a new low and she needs to rebuild her life back in New York.
Even if this means tip-toeing carefully around brothers Denny and Jackie, she’ll be reunited with her special favourite, Shane.
She returns to find her father, Mickey, has become forgetful, confused, and is losing his eyesight, but very happy to have her back in the fold.
Sunday also discovers family friend, Kale, who has always been part of the Brennan family, is now married with a child.
As she becomes re-acquainted with them all she realises their need for her in their lives is equal to her need for them to be back in hers.
When the family’s business is brought to the brink of financial ruin by a deranged man from her past, Sunday realises past secrets need to be confronted. Secrets that have damaged family members for generations and will upend all they thought they knew about their lives.
This Irish Catholic family must confront their demons to survive and move on, united once more by their love for each other.
A beautifully written and wonderfully moving novel that deals with issues faced by family members in times of trouble. Secrets, kept through fear and shame, that prevent understanding and forgiveness and lead to resentment and the break up of the family circle.
Intuitive and tender, suspenseful and heart-wrenching, a must-read for 2022.
