24 years ago Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures released the first fully computer-animated feature-length film named Toy Story. Not only did it become a major film success, the original movie, along with its sequels, shaped their way into many childhoods, including mine.
A story of friendship and loyalty, each sequel was more heartfelt than the other. And just when you thought it was all over, Pixar decided to release one last one. But did we really need a fourth Toy Story?
Just when you think the story of Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) could not possibly be stretched any farther, they go ahead and prove you wrong. Woody, ever loyal to his kid, whether it be Andy or Bonnie, shows Forky (Tony Hale), Bonnie’s new project and favourite toy, why he needs to embrace being Bonnie’s toy.
When Bonnie’s family decides to go on a road trip, the toys come along and Woody ends up getting himself and Forky into an unexpected adventure that reunites Woody with Bo-Peep (Annie Potts) and her Sheep. They meet some very interesting characters along the way, some with their own intentions.
This movie is full of laughter, tears and if you are a child of the ’80-90s, you’ll jump at the dark humour of some of the new characters. Toy Story 4 does not only remind us of the message of loyalty, second chances and self-sacrifice, it asks us of our purpose and the choices that complete us.
Toy Story 4 is not a movie that we thought we needed, yet it completes the saga. After watching this, it is clear that the franchise could not just end at 3. Directed by Josh Cooley, with a great soundtrack and amazing animation, Toy Story 4 is extremely heartwarming, funny and brings out the brave in all of us. It is an animated movie at its best.
Honestly, if you are not at all touched by the movie, you’d have to be a toy yourself!
