Thunderbolts introduce a reluctant superhero gang of misfits to stop the dark forces.
Yelena (Florence Pugh) visits her father (David Harbour). Both characters are wandering through life without purpose.
Meanwhile, Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is in charge of top-secret lab patients. After a failed experiment, everything was supposed to be destroyed. One of the ex-patients, Bob, finds himself dazed and confused. This quickly spirals into the blues.
Stuck in a difficult situation – Ghost (Hannah John Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) have to think outside of the box.
Bob accidentally discovers he has powers, but this doesn’t stop the ‘black dog’ from rearing its ugly head. Yelena can sympathise with his trauma.
There are some unexpected scenes dealing with depression and trauma. This will make more sense to you, if you’re familiar with the house visualisation and pop psychology.
In some ways, Marvel has reprised itself. But the finale feels rushed and undercuts some of the character arcs. Many reviewers are comparing it to DC Comics’ The Suicide Squad.
Thunderbolts is a fresh take on the well-trodden antihero path.
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts has a release date of 2 May 2025.
