Set to be the romantic film for the upcoming festive season, This Time Next Year is a fun ride through the dating game and inner London sites. Curiously, our protagonist Minnie (played by Sophie Cookson) reminded of Keira Knightley in her earlier flicks, pre-Love Actually.
You may also recognise Minnie’s love interest, Quinn (Emily’s – in Paris – pursuer, Lucien Laviscount). What binds these two together goes way back to the day they were both born. Their mothers (played by Bridgerton’s Golda Rosheuvel and wonderful Monica Dolan) shared the same maternity ward during the countdown hours to the year 2000. Who would be the first to be born come the new millennium morning and be the first to grab their favourite baby name before the other?
The outcome of which becomes apparent and the reason for the hostility between the now twenty-somethings and the distance of their mothers. Time has not been kind, and in touching scenes, each of the mothers find they need each other again. But their children – will they, or won’t they? As Minnie’s business struggles, how can she possibly concentrate on love, let alone accept business advice from the now management consultant Quinn. And Quinn? Well, he shares similar characteristics to his Emily in Paris’ counterpart – endless fascination from other women and no sign of settling down any time soon.
This Time Next Year makes its Australian premiere as part of the 2024 British Film Festival at Palace Cinemas. Check your local guides for screening times.
