Montana : 1873. In the moments before his execution, Isaac Broadway gives his estranged son Henry (Brandon Lessard) an impossible task: murder the sheriff of Trinity who framed him for a crime he didn’t commit.
Intent on fulfilling his promise, Henry travels to the remote town, only to discover that the man he’s come to kill is already dead. The new sheriff Gabriel Dove (Pierce Brosnan) boasts a peaceful town and a somewhat heavy Irish accent.
Soon Henry’s arrival will pique the interests of many. The mysterious loner, St Christopher (Samuel L Jackson) suspects Henry holds information on the location of a huge fortune. And local hoodlums find Henry in their crosshairs, when he inadvertently kills the brother of the gang leader. Henry tries to shake off the attention and it’s not always clear who is friend or foe.
While The Unholy Trinity shares many similar tropes of hundreds of Westerns that have come before it, it manages a compelling take on the genre. Perhaps it’s the stunning Montana visuals, the surprising twists or the unexpected performance of Pierce Brosnan. For whatever reason, the Australian director-writer duo of Richard Gray and Lee Zachariah deserve the recognition.
