The Secret Path by Karen Swan is her 20th novel. It is set in Costa Rica, a country that attracts the wealthy from abroad with its beautiful beaches, and rainforests teeming with rare wildlife species. All is not as it appears in paradise, however, and tension is building due to conflicting interests.
The Tremain family have been involved in the conservation of this beautiful region for many years and still spend time there.
Tara Tremain, however, refused to live her affluent family’s inclusive and protected life. Instead, she chose to work hard on a career in medicine and has now attained the position of Consultant Surgeon at a prestigious London Hospital. Her partner, Rory Hutchings, is a Senior Resident in Cardiology there.
Although Tara hasn’t visited Costa Rica for years she is persuaded to attend an important family occasion there. She is accompanied by Rory and her best friend, Holly, who also works at the hospital, Holly’s partner, Dev, and their son, Jimmy.
But, as the story unfolds, she is drawn into the lives of the local people, some of whom she knew as a child. And, when a young, seriously ill, small boy needs her help she must trek through the treacherous, dense forest in order to save his life.
And, far worse, she faces the humiliation of asking help from Alex Carter, the man who broke her heart and her trust ten years ago.
Karen Swan’s latest novel takes the reader on a journey to Costa Rica, a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island. It has a population of around 5 million in a land area of 51,060 square kilometres.
