Paris Can Wait was directed by Eleanor Coppola (wife of the more famous director Francis). This is her first feature at the age of 81. An American woman (played by Diane Lane) is facing empty nest syndrome, as she has sold her business and her only child has left home. She finds herself with ear problems so instead of travelling around with her high-flying business husband and telling him where to find his socks, she goes on a road trip with his business associate.
Jacque, her driver is a charming Frenchman who is obsessed with food and romances her to the tilt. Think fancy restaurants, picnics, museums, markets and even a carful of flowers.
This movie is nice but lacks substance with a terribly unsatisfying ending. There are some parts where the characters speak in French, but there are no subtitles, so I felt like I was missing out of some of the jokes.
The scenery and food, of course, is divine. The storyline could be an older woman’s escape fantasy.
Paris Can Wait is a light enjoyable ride without much spark.
