Life on the Leash: A Novel by Victoria Schade is her comical, romantic debut novel about a dog trainer who is an expert at managing her four-legged friends, but whose love life is a disaster.
Cora Bellamy has successfully run her own dog training business for years, perfectly content with her rescue pit-bull, Fritz, as the love of her life after her most recent romantic disaster.
So when Cora’s housemate, Maggie, tells Cora that her ex-fiancé is to appear on “America’s Hottest Landscaper?” reality show, she feels he has come back to haunt her.
Worse, she is then accused of trolling her sworn enemy, the celebrity
dog trainer, who has his own show called ‘Doggy Dictator’, the infamous Boris
Ershovich!
Her luck appears to have changed, however, when she meets Charlie Gill, the
hottest client she’s ever had. But there’s a problem. Charlie is already taken.
Cora turns to her new friend — the geeky Eli Crawford, who is always there to help Cora with her problems, including her love life.
But even though romance seems to be a possibility with Charlie, could
there be a glimmer between her and Eli, too?
Cora’s life becomes more complicated as she copes with a dysfunctional client
and her neglected pet, plus the decision of whether to audition for a dog
training TV show.
Can she effectively organise her profession and her love life or will both run riot like untrained dogs?
Basically this is a Rom-Com with the addition of dogs and there’s nothing wrong with that if you enjoy both. There is certainly an element of truth in the way people treat their supposed ‘best friends’ and there may be dog trainers around that employ drastic measures to bring their animal clients into line.
Therefore, as regards dogs, the issues were dealt with sympathetically. Not so the humans, however, as readers may regard remarks passed on female characters, regarding their clothes, makeup and body shape, sexist and cruel. Also, the petty sniping (trolling?) by Cora against her rival may cause
