Jumanji is the second fantasy adventure film adapted from the 1981 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg.
The first film was made in 1995. This one is a stand-alone sequel and has the subtitle – Welcome to the Jungle.
Four annoying and self-absorbed teenagers discover an old video game while in detention in the school’s basement. They take on the adult avatars of the game and are forced to play the rules.
Geeky gamer Spencer becomes a brawny adventurer (Dwayne Johnston) is forced to confront ex-best friend football jock Fridge. Bethany (the beautiful) unexpectedly befriends Martha (the geek). Later romantic affections start to form.
The storyline is similar to playing a computer game, with a map to follow and challenges to be completed so that they can advance to the end goal of returning the green gem. The team soon discover they have three lives, so it’s better for them to work together so that they can all leave alive.
Jumanji has a cringe-worthy beginning but once the characters are in the jungle it’s funny and entertaining.
Jumanji is showing in cinemas around Australia from boxing day.
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas.
