We chatted with Australian pop artist, Brittany Maggs :
How do you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as fun, upbeat, heartfelt, real, believable and empowering. It definitely falls under the Pop genre, but each song has it’s own really unique sound to it.
Who or what inspires your songwriting?
When I write music I tend to write about whatever I am feeling at that point in time. If I’m happy then I write about whatever is making me happy but if I’m sad then I tend to dig deep and explore what’s truly making me sad. I went through a lot of changes this year and had a lot of personal growth so I think that helped me to write a lot of my music on my new EP ‘From Me to You’.
What inspired your latest release, ‘Reasons’?
‘Reasons’ is about trying to chase a love that is no longer there. I wrote ‘Reasons’ when I was going through a breakup and it became almost a form of therapy. I was able to explore all my emotions and share them in a really creative way. I wanted to write about the breakup but I also wanted to show the other side of a relationship. Most times people don’t take blame for their side of a failed relationship and I wanted the song to reflect that I was aware it wasn’t all one sided. It takes two people to end a relationship so that’s really what the song speaks to.
Tell us about ‘Lazy Boy’?
Lazy Boy will always be so special to me as it was my first release. I think it’s just such a fun song that is really about female empowerment. But at the same time it’s also saying I do love you but please just do better! It’s for all the women who have dated a guy that was really lazy and made no effort in the relationship. Let’s face it, we can all recall at least one ex who fits that description!
What’s it like to work with Dami Im?
Dami is so incredible. She’s so talented and just down to earth. Being part of this tour is a dream come true and I feel so lucky to work with her. She is so kind and always down to have a chat.
Tell us about your creative process?
I always tend to write ideas down on my notes app, be it phrases or words. When I go into a recording session I scroll through my notes to see if I feel anything could relate to my emotions that day. I then create a beat and write around the beat.
What’s the most common myth about singers?
I think there’s a common misconception that singers think they’re better than everyone and that all they do all day is sing. I spend my days in the studio, writing and recording and now that I’m touring a lot of time is spent travelling and on the road. I can’t speak for everyone obviously, but I do think that’s probably one of the biggest misconceptions!
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
I would say being part of this tour. It’s a dream come true and I’m always so thankful for the opportunity to be able to play around Australia.
Who or what inspires you?
A lot of people inspire me. My family, other musicians – I feel like my family is a huge inspiration to me because they all have their dreams and they’re all chasing them. I find it just pushes me further to want to chase mine.
Do you have any predictions for the music industry?
Not a prediction, but I do think it will continue to grow and evolve constantly. I think people will explore more different genres and mainstream Pop will just become a spectrum of different types of music!
Do you have any plans for the future?
I definitely am going to continue releasing more music and content. I would love to have my own tour one day and be able to travel the world with my music!
