Here are some ideas for hosting a Brisbane Lions party in the comfort of your own home.
AFL Party Catering
You might like to have a barbeque or heat up some pizza in the oven. Think pies, sausages and open burgers with a couple of salads. You can’t go wrong with a cold potato salad, coleslaw and a green salad.
To make it easy you might like to order a dedicated Banjo’s Bakery Café value boxes. Find your closest Banjo’s Bakery Café to pick up a pie and feel at home this finals series. Banjo’s value boxes are also available via Click and Collect or UberEats.
You can pack the beers in a wheelbarrow or the bathtub with ice cubes. You might like to get a branded insulated shopping bag. Or set up a minibar with recipe ideas from The Ultimate Book of Cocktails.
Brisbane Lions AFL Jelly Desserts Recipe
Here’s an easy recipe to make for dessert. You’ll need to do it over a couple of days. (Or smash through and do it on the day of the match).
Ingredients
- 1 packet of Mango passionfruit or yellow jelly
- 1 packet of Watermelon or red jelly
- 1 packet of Blue Heaven or Berry Blue jelly or blue jelly (optional)
- 1 container of Greek-style all-natural yogurt
- Garnish with: Chopped nuts, blue sprinkles, or grated chocolate
Method
- Make Mango passionfruit or yellow jelly. Use only 1/2 cup of hot water and 1/2 cup of cold water.
- If you want a nice presentation, place your glasses on an angle in a silicon cupcake tray. Then pour in the yellow jelly using a Pyrex glass measuring jug. (I used a large and small jug). Allow to set in the fridge.
- When the first jelly has set, you can make up the second red jelly. Again follow the instructions on the packet, but use half the liquids. Let the red jelly cool a tad, then pour on top of the yellow jelly.
- The glasses can be upright for this step. Place it back in the fridge to set.
- If you have left a gap in your glasses, then you can either add a third jelly – it has to be blue!!!
- When you are ready to serve the dessert, add some plain Greek yogurt and top with either blue sprinkles, grated chocolate or chopped nuts.
AFL Party Decorations
Let’s keep the decorations to a bare minimum, so there’s less cleanup afterwards. You’ll need a packet of paper napkins (maroon or gold) and you can place the paper straws in a Retro Lions Stein glass.
If you are hosting a party with lots of single females – you might enjoy taking selfies with a Harris Andrews (life-sized) wall sticker. It’s a shame you can’t have the whole team. If you have kids, you might like to entertain them with a Jekca lion (large or small) which you can then use as your room’s centrepiece.
If there is a big group of people, you might like to splurge on a bunch of yellow sunflowers, maroon roses, dahlias or carnations for the table. Try to add some native leaves.

AFL Party Dress Code
The dress code is anything in maroon, royal blue and golden yellow. There are plenty of maroon shorts at Jay Jays or City Beach. Look out for the maroon Guess bucket hats.
Of course, you can purchase some official branded merchandise. Think jerseys, tees, shirts, caps and water bottles.
Did you know that you can personalize your jersey, backpack, shirt or jumper with unique letters and numbers at Rebel Sports? (It’s up to 15 characters and 2 large letters – $15 for one and $20 for both sets). The vinyl lettering and numbers are available in black, navy, red, yellow and white.
The man of the house may like to swan around in an AFL satin robe and Lachie Neale socks and put his feet up. Don’t forget to get a pet bandana for the pet of the house.
