We have been eating paleo for many years, and over the last year, we have started to add some keto diet principals. Here are some of our tips to eating ketogenic while living in South East Brisbane.
1. Learn the basic principles
A strict keto diet is difficult to follow, so start off slowly and only make one change to your diet each week. Be gentle to yourself, if you slip up.
When you start a new diet you might like to buy a book or two for recipe ideas and meal plans. Some of the cookbook authors we have on our shelf are Irena Macri, Luke Hines, Scott Gooding, Pete Evans, Prof Tim Noakes and Prof Grant Scholfield, and Dr Peter Brucker.
2. Learning to shop keto
The best places to shop in a grocery store are around the edges. Fill up your shopping basket with lots of fresh vegetables, some fruits and fewer things in packages.
I like to have a cup of hot bone broth in the morning. We like to eat plenty of fermented foods like yogurt, probiotics, kefir, kombucha and traditional sauerkrauts.
I like to cook healthy salads from scratch. At the moment, I’m enjoying tabbouleh made with buckwheat pasta. I like to snack on hummus with carrot sticks, or macadamia nuts.
3. Track your numbers
We like to use the chronometer website (and app) to track our progress. There are handy colourful graphs to see your overall progress.
4. Watch a documentary
We like to watch a new documentary at least once a month. It’s a great way to learn about changing your diet or shifting to a healthier lifestyle overall.
5. Try a subscription box
If you live some distance from the shops, then you might like to try a subscription box. We recommend the Paleo Warehouse subscription box as a starting place.
