A darkly funny and unexpectedly tender entry at this year’s Nordic Film Festival, Home (Heim) delivers all the nostalgia, chaos, and charm of a classic 80s-style romantic comedy with a sharp, modern Scandinavian edge.
When children’s TV host Anni (Hanne Skille Reitan) suffers a very public, expletive-laden meltdown on live television, her career rests on a knife’s edge. Suspended, broke, and on a forced break, Anni retreats home. Before she knows it, she’s crash-landed right back where she started: sleeping in her teenage childhood bedroom under her mother’s roof.
Anni is instantly pulled back into the emotions and teenage angst she thought she had left behind. She falls back in to her childhood part-time job at the local service station, and soon comes face to face with her former teenage crush. Between him and a childhood friend who helps her overcome a deep-seated fear, who will she choose?
While there are some formulaic scenes at the beginning, when the realisation of her unresolved personal trauma hits, the film shifts from bubble-gum comedy to genuinely-moving drama.
