Flatliners is a remake of the 1999 science fiction horror film about a group of medical students who attempt to discover what happens after death.
The film starts fairly ordinarily as the students (Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons) struggle with finding time to catch up, study and gain hands-on practical experience in a hospital.
They start conducting experiments on each other to produce a near-death experience. Courtney volunteers to go first and suddenly she has heightened intelligence and feelings. After an exhilarating success, they all want to be next (except for sensible Ray). However, the downside to restarting the brain is increased anxiety and hallucinations.
The suspense doesn’t really kick in until the last third of the movie, so die-hard horror fans might find it a bit tame. The characters each need to admit and face up to their life regrets.
Fact: Kiefer Sutherland starred in the original and returns to the sequel as a professor at the medical university. The original starred Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt.
Flatliners poses an interesting insight into near-death experiences, guilt and remorse. #FlatlinersMovie
