Far from Home by Danielle Steel – Germany, 1944 – Hitler’s forces are wreaking unspeakable damage across Europe. In public, Gregor and Arielle von Auspeck are an aristocratic couple who play an important role in Berlin’s high society. In private, however, they disagree with everything Hitler stands for. What Arielle doesn’t realise, however, is that life as she knows it is about to change forever!

Midway through a trip to occupied Paris, Arielle is forced to flee to the countryside under a new identity. She escapes to a remote town, masquerading as a Parisian widow. Only her daughter Marianna, stuck in Berlin, knows that her mother is hiding somewhere in France. While Arielle waits to be reunited with her family, her new friend Sebastien introduces her to the Resistance movement, who fight for good over evil.

When the war finally ends in 1945, everyone has lost someone, the von Auspecks included. Their possessions have long been seized and Berlin lies in rubble. What happened to Marianna during the bombing? And can mother and daughter finally be reunited?

Danielle Steel tells of another aspect of WWII, that of those, who vehemently opposed Hitler from within Berlin’s high society, putting themselves in great danger.

It reminds us that they too suffered, and had to leave their homes to survive retribution. Afterwards, they had to pick up the pieces, discover and mourn their losses and carry on.

A poignant must read for 2025
