Everything You Need to Know about 4DX Cinema in Australia

4DX cinema has launched in Australia with extra special effects and moving seats that synchronise perfectly with the action on the screen to fully immerse you in the movie. I headed along to the preview of the second Jumanji film in 4DX at the Event Cinemas in Chermside. We were told to buckle in. 

What is 4DX? 

4DX is a 4D film format developed by CJ 4DPlex, a subsidiary of South Korean cinema chain CJ CGV. The format augments films with stereoscopic 3D and various practical effects, including motion seats, wind, strobe lights, simulated snow, and scents.

The specially designed 4DX seats will: 

• Heave – move up and down
• Roll – left and right
• Pitch – forward and back
• Tickler at your feet

There may be water, fog and air, scents, scrobbling, light effects and bubbles in the theatre. 

4DX can be watching in both 2D and 3D formats. You’ll need to wear 3D glasses only if the film format is in 3D, and these are provided. It’s a regular movie theatre screen, whereas an IMAX will have a larger screen. 

Here are my Handy Tips for making the most of your 4DX experience: 

• Seats are in blocks of four – try to sit on the ends for a bumpier ride
• If you get tired of air being blown at you – sit forward in your seat until the scene is over
• Avoid ordering messy food. Avoid all hot liquids, such as tea or coffee. I had a water bottle which I drank in quiet scenes. 
• Keep your glasses for next time to save $1. 

When you book your ticket with Event Cinemas, select the right theatre, film and day, then filter your results by ticking 4DX under experiences. 

The best films to watch in 4DX are going to be anything with action, horror or thriller. The technology and effects will be only added to films that are best suited to it.  

Jumanji 4DX was super fun and entertaining. I squealing and laughed out loud. I can’t wait to see Star Wars in 4DX and I’m booking my ticket straight away.
