School of Rock @ QPAC
12 July - 4 August
Tune your air guitar and raise your rock salute, because an additional week has just been added to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC’s) season of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash-hit rock musical School of Rock.
School of Rock will open its Brisbane premiere season on 12 July 2019 in QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, following an acclaimed debut season in Melbourne and a national tour of the Australian production in China.
Based on the hit film starring Jack Black, School of Rock follows dropout Dewey Finn, a failed rock star forced to earn some extra cash by posing as a teacher at a prestigious prep school. But Dewey isn’t going to teach his straight-laced students’ algebra or arithmetic, oh no. These kids are going to learn what it takes to become the most awesome rock ‘n’ roll band of all time.
“You won’t leave without a smile on your face and your kids will love you forever.” –THE AGE
“This is a triumph and guaranteed to uplift in almost every way.” –HERALD SUN
“A big-hearted show. Loud and cheeky, a feel-good experience with a hint of anarchic wildness.” –EVENING STANDARD
Sydney-based actor, composer and musical theatre performer Brent Hill will reprise his role as wannabe rock star Dewey Finn in the Brisbane season, while Amy Lehpamer will once again button up, starch up and don her spectacles to play the uptight but lovable straight-laced schoolmarm with a hankering for Stevie Nicks.
They will be joined on stage each night by two alternating casts of extraordinarily talented pint-sized musical prodigies, aged nine to 13 years of age, who will deliver scorching riffs, pounding drums and all-live rock.
The full adult cast will bring together some of Australia’s leading stage performers, including John O’Hara (Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, Dusty, Cats, Singin’ In The Rain) who will play Ned Shcneebly, Matt Crowley (Molly: the Molly Meldrum Story, House Husbands) as Theo, Nadia Komazec as Patti di Marco (The Rocky Horror Show, Bring it On the Musical, Mamma Mia!) and Joe Kosky (Kinky Boots, High Fidelity, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert) who will be the alternate Dewey, as well as ensemble cast members: Bianca Baykara, Ellis Dolan, Alex Hyne, Andrew Kroenert, Bree Langridge, Jenny Little, Zachary Pidd, Michaela Powell, Markesha McCoy, Jack Van Staveren, Matthew Hamilton, James Cutler, Sophie Weiss and Stephen Wheat.
Since opening on Broadway to critical acclaim in 2015, School of Rock has been playing to packed houses and is now captivating audiences across the US and in London’s West End. The production has smashed box office records, garnered rave reviews, earned four Tony nominations, and won both the 2017 Oliver for Outstanding Achievement in Music and the 2017 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical.
With a new score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by three-time Tony nominee Glenn Slater, book by Downton Abbey‘s Oscar-winning Julian Fellowes, School of Rock will have the whole house rocking.
Suitable for rockers of all ages, School of Rock will ‘stick it to the man’ and blow the roof off the Lyric Theatre, QPAC this July!
