Gluten Free Expo

15 June - 16 June

A two-day annual celebration of Australia’s best gluten-free food producers will come together under one roof when the Gluten Free Expo returns to Brisbane’s Convention and Exhibition Centre this June 15 and 16.

Gluten-free foodies and people living with coeliac disease will discover new and exciting food products, access a fabulous collection of gluten-free providers, experience live cooking demonstrations and hear from Australia’s best lifestyle dietitians and health practitioners.

Don’t expect to go home hungry, Brisbane’s only dedicated gluten-free event will include exciting new-to-market gluten-free additions as well as old favourites, including mac and cheese pasta, donuts, pies and Chinese cuisine frozen meals.

According to Coeliac Australia, approximately one in 70 Australians have coeliac disease, although up to 80 per cent of cases are undiagnosed.

Meanwhile, 1 in 8 Aussies have ditched gluten and wheat from their diet as a lifestyle choice and growing wellness trend[1]

The Gluten Free Expo will be welcomed by Brisbane coeliac and mum of two, Nicki Mussell, whose daughter Harper is also being treated for the hereditary disease.

“We’re constantly looking for tasty, easy and exciting food that passes a fussy six-year-old’s taste buds, puts the fun back into eating for both of us and busts food FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) when it comes to school lunches,” Ms Mussell said.

“The Gluten Free Expo is exciting and a much-needed event as we can run wild and try everything without the worry of cross-contamination which is one of our biggest battles and a constant worry when dining out.”

Dr James Daveson, leading Brisbane gastroenterologist and guest speaker at the Gluten Free Expo said a gluten-free diet is the only medical treatment for coeliac disease and for some patients, this can be quite challenging.

“The Gluten Free Expo is an important event as it highlights the growing range of options available and can help patients manage their gluten-free diet,” Dr Daveson said.

“Unlike gluten intolerance, the long term consequences of untreated coeliac disease are related to chronic systemic inflammation, poor nutrition and malabsorption of nutrients.

“Fortunately, the timely diagnosis of coeliac disease and treatment with a strict gluten-free diet can prevent or reverse many of the associated health conditions,” Dr Daveson said.

This year, the Gluten Free Expo will also include a selection of vegan products and is open to all members of the public and wholesale customers.

The Gluten Free Expo is presented by, and helps raise funds for, Coeliac Australia, a not-for-profit organisation.
