The Dog Stars trailer lulls you into a false sense of what the film will be like. But that’s not a bad thing if you don’t mind being surprised.
The first half focuses on the four main characters. We slowly discover their backstory and how they came to be in their current circumstances.
Hig (Jacob Elordi) is a widowed pilot who lives with a military survivalist, Bangley (Josh Brolin).
The pair deliver to a group of orphans and a father-daughter duo (Margaret Qualley) who live on a farmstead.
The quiet idealist survivalist lifestyle is effectively punctuated by the reality of “survival of the fittest”. The loud violence and ransacking by gangs of Reapers comes abruptly.
The twist at the ending wasn’t expected. You have to be careful who you trust in this world, because unlikely enemies may dress up and act like the perfect host.
There is a scene at the end that haunted me for days afterwards.
Based on Peter Heller’s bestseller of the same name.
Dog Stars gets 4 stars for the brave and fearless post-apocalyptic world.
