The night was crisp – cloudless and starry. I walked up the stairs through a narrow corridor to meet a tasteful, brick and mortar bar that is Black Bear Lodge. The walls are draped in fine artifacts and taxidermy, candles illuminate the booths; and a thick, red velvet curtain separates the general area from the stage room.
Adrian Eagle was set to play his show on this fine Brisbane night, touring his latest single A.O.K. – his first in two years. It’s a tonic testament, trailing his battle with mental health and the hill he had to climb to achieve wellness. You can grasp it in his words, but especially more, you can capture it in his smooth and crystal voice, his facial expressions – soulful – whilst spilling his story in flight.
“And I had a demon up in my head
Was chewing up my life away
I know in my heart I’m good
I’m learning now to stay good
I just wanna live free
And fly right through the day
With kindness in my heart
An act of kindness is a start”
He’s an up-and-coming artist, an Australian native, Adelaide raised, and has been most recently featured on Triple J – playing his latest single and covering Ocean Alley’s ‘Confidence’ for Like A Version. This year has been the biggest yet for this young talent, and it’s been an excellent introduction for an artist worth listening to.
