A Mind of Her Own by Danielle Steel – is the story of the beautiful, and clever, Alexandra Bouvier, who was raised believing she could achieve anything. When the First World War breaks out in 1914, however, both her parents are killed while volunteering on the front lines, leaving Alex alone and distraught. With the backing of her loving grandmother, Alex is resolved to continue with school in Paris in order to get a university education.
In 1918, when Spanish flu ravages Europe, Alex’s grandmother falls seriously ill and dies, leaving her granddaughter all alone in the world. Alex decides to send a despairing telegram to her last living relative, the American grandfather who lives in Illinois. He wants Alex to live with him, and, as soon as possible, she sets sail for America.
During the next few years, American women, step by step, will claim more rights for themselves. Alex is, therefore, able to attend university to study journalism. Eventually, her talent secures her an internship with a New York newspaper, where she meets Oliver, a crime reporter. They are immediately attracted to each other, but Alex refuses to let anyone get in the way of her life’s ambitions. Will she be able to follow her dreams, however, without paying attention to her heart?
This is another marvellous historical novel headlining those determined women, who paved the way for those who followed, to build careers in employment previously barred to them.
A heart-lifting must-read!
