A Dream of Italy by Nicky Pellegrino, the bestselling author of A Year at the Hotel Gondola, once again transports the reader to Italy to celebrate the people, their mountainside town and the glorious profusion of Italian food.
Mayor Salvio Valentini has a dream to save the abandoned buildings in Montenello and so rejuvenate his beloved town. His assistant, Augusto, has the idea of bringing in wealthy foreigners to renovate the houses, which will solve their problems. As the houses are almost ruins, they decide to charge just one euro for each dwelling. They draw up an advertisement and, using the internet, invite people, worldwide, to contact Salvio for consideration as a future resident of Montenello.
The advertisement is read with great excitement by many people including Mimi, in London, whose husband walked out on what she thought was a happy marriage. Then, there is Elise, in Bristol, who is desperate to buy her own home, although her partner, Richard, doesn’t seem too keen on the idea. Edward, in Sydney, feels pressured by his partner’s family, who are expecting them to get married. He needs to escape and take Gino away from it all, preferably to Italy, where Gino’s family originate. Each of them submits their application. A fourth person claims one of the ruins as her own, but why is she so keen to live in Montenello?
Can they each find happiness and bring the failing town to life again for all its residents?
This is another wonderful read by Nicky, whose talent for creating such diverse and heart-warming characters knows no bounds. Coupled with her vast knowledge of Italian food and intuitive ideas for house renovation, she brings Montenello and its people to life.
Relax, read, enjoy!
