Both in debt up to their necks, Albert (Pio Marmaï) and Bruno (Jonathan Cohen) have turned to a community worker (Mathieu Amalric) for help with their financial woes. After a group workshop, they stumble into a bar that is hosting a gathering of young social activists, led by a vivacious organiser (Noémie Merlant).
Attracted more by the free beer and chips than the group’s ethos, Albert and Bruno join their movement without any particular conviction. They have nothing in common with this group of misfits protesting the world’s wrongs. But they are drawn into the groups’ activities, each one becoming more brazen than the last. Sensing opportunity, Bruno even takes centre stage to propose an attack in the hopes it will dig both he and Albert out of their respective holes.
The trailer doesn’t do justice to the humour and surprises in store in A Difficult Year. Cohen and Marmaï are a perfect comedic pairing to pull off an unlikely caper about activism and mass consumerism.
A Difficult Year opens nationally from Thursday 26 September 2024. Check your local guides for screening times.
