Moving to a new city is exciting, especially when it’s a city like Brisbane with lots of new opportunities and thousands of people to meet. But as exciting as it can be to move to the Queensland capital, it can be equally confusing and even terrifying if you are not prepared or don’t know anyone there.

However, with the right resources and an appropriate guide that this article has put together for you, you can navigate through the beautiful city of Brisbane and settle there with ease.

  1. Getting Familiar

Neighbourhood Hunting

Getting to know the whole city as you start to settle in can be overwhelming. Start by getting familiar with your neighbourhood as it is a smaller area to research and focus on.

It is also helpful to do your research about different neighbourhoods beforehand. Finding the neighbourhood that best suits your needs can give you a headstart as you start to explore and settle in one of the busiest cities of Queensland. You can use the following article that breaks down different Brisbane neighbourhoods in detail for you to explore.

Connecting With People

Once you have found a good neighbourhood, it is important to meet new people, especially if you haven’t been to Brisbane before or are living alone.

NextDoor is a great networking app that connects you with people living in the same neighbourhood as you. The app requires you to add your address, verifies it, and uses it to keep any non-neighbours from interacting on the digital platform.

You can connect with people who live close by, find tips for exploring the city, stay informed on the latest issues, and much more.

Local Blogs

In today’s media-centred world, it is best to stay updated through digital forums. Local blogs are a great way to get an inside scoop on local politics, affairs, and drama.

Having access to personalised reviews of local stores, restaurants, and places to visit can be an added advantage of knowing what to avoid.

Digital forums are also another great way to connect with people. Interacting through likes and comments is a great way to make yourself known in the local community. And it’s subtle too if you do not wish to indulge in long conversations!

From real estate to theatre to school and sewing classes, local blogs cover it all! Check out Brisbane’s 45 top-rated blogs to create your digital footprint.

Signing up for the local paper is another great way to keep yourself in the loop, both politically and for social matters. Brisbane Times has an online subscription at only $1.95 that you might want to check out.

  1. Getting Around

According to a new report, Brisbane has the best public transport in the whole country. This makes commuting much easier as compared to other regions.

However, when navigating through a busy city like Brisbane, it is important to know your way around, especially when you are new to the area.

Google Maps, Apple Maps, and MapQuest are a few (out of many) apps that make directions easier. Not only do they provide you with multiple route suggestions based on the time of day and traffic conditions, but they also connect you with the best local restaurants, shops, bookstores, and more.

It is also convenient to book a tour guide or a car service like Uber that helps you get around all the best places to visit when you first settle in.

  1. Settling In

Moving Assistance

If you are moving with friends or family, it is easier to divide the tasks and stay organised. But if you are alone and do not know anyone, not so much.

So it is better to hire help, at least for the first few days of moving. Moving assistance apps like Updater will simplify a lot of your tasks, from booking movers, to forwarding your mail, to connecting the internet, utilities, and more. The Updater app will greatly simplify the moving experience and it is free and easy to use.

Although Updater is pretty useful, it’s not the best at finding you the best moving company deals. This is where Muval comes in, which lets you compare local removalist quotes so you don’t spend any more money than you have to on moving.

Finally, making sure your house is in good shape when you move in is also very important, as it will ultimately make maintenance and future repairs easier. Hiring help for the first few times and learning along the way can prove to be a great investment.

Establishing Social And Professional Relations

One of the most difficult challenges you can face, especially if you are moving alone, is making friends.

Luckily in a city like Brisbane that has a population of over 2.2 million, there are plenty of people to meet.

While social networking apps are highly effective for meeting new people, it is still important and fun to meet people the traditional way. You can volunteer in your local area or help someone in need. Small social gestures can go a long way!

It is easier to establish professional relations once you have made friends. You can connect with local offices for employment or internships through your friends.

Apps like LinkedIn can also help you search around companies both in your area and remote, so you’re aware of the best employment opportunities.
