Bacchus Sommelier Andrew Giblin shares his personal five top drops for this Father’s Day:
1. For the quintessential Barossa Shiraz-type Dad – try the 2014 Kaesler ‘Bogan’ Shiraz.
This 100% Shiraz is a blend of two vineyards in the 1899 Marananga and 1965 Nuriootpa plantings. Taste-wise it is the world-famous Barossa Valley-style red, full of ripe plums, black cherries and smooth tannins. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Father’s Day steak dinner. Kaesler’s winemaker Reid Bosward tried this wine out in the front bar of his local hotel with a steak sandwich and when he passed the bottle around for some input, the response was unanimous – ‘you’re crazy if you don’t buy two’!
2. For an award-winning Dad – try the 2012 Jim Barry ‘Benbournie’ Cabernet Sauvignon.
One of the first families of Australian wine, Jim Barry Wines from the Clare Valley have been producing top quality wines since 1959. Currently presided over by managing director Peter Barry and his sons Tom and Sam, Jim Barry Wines are now available in more than 25 counties around the world and were recently named winery of the year by one the world’s most influential wine writers, Matthew Jukes. The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Clare Valley in South Australia. It is deep crimson red with a mix of dark vine fruits, dark chocolate and fresh garden herbs. It’s designed to be enjoyed now but will also stand up to being cellared for another 30 Fathers Day’s.
3. To take this year’s Favourite Child title – try the 2016 Savaterre Estate Chardonnay from Keppell Smith.
Located in Beechworth in Victoria, Savaterre was established by Keppell, after working with Phillip Jones at Bass Phillip. It is dry-grown, hand-tendered and farmed along organic principles. Fermented using only indigenous yeasts, the wine is unique, intensely textual and complex. The Chardonnay is greenish gold, vibrant, bright and aromatic. Matched with some chargrilled sweetcorn on the cob or fresh natural oysters, this wine will surely remind Dad who his favourite child is!
4. When you can share a sip with Dad – try the 2014 Genesis Syrah.
For those children old enough to share a sip with Dad Giblin recommends a wine from father and son team, Julian and Adam Castagna. The 2014 Genesis Syrah is estate-grown Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier from one of Beechworth’s most iconic wineries. With a firm core of red and black fruits and vibrant floral tones, this wine delivers a structure that is both gentle and complex. This Father’s Day you will probably find Adam and Julian out the back of the winery, sharing a bottle, enjoying a house-cured prosciutto pizza cooked in their very own pizza oven.
5. For Francophile Dads – try the 2015 Bouchard Pere & Fils ‘Beaune de Chateau’ Premier Cru Rouge.
Beaune de Chateau comes from 17 different Premier Crus that are fermented and barrel-aged separately. This wine has a history back to 1907, and the 2015 is an outstanding example. 100% Pinot Noir, it is black cherry, red currant and blood orange, and is a wonderful example of why Burgundy has been the dominant force in Pinot Noir for centuries. The 2015 vintage is ready to drink immediately and requires no cellaring to enjoy with any manner of poultry, especially duck. (Giblin let slip he plans to be sitting on the couch enjoying a toasted duck and mushroom sandwich, watching the footy and sipping on a glass of Beaune de Chateau this Father’s Day!).
