On my last holiday, I decided to paint the spare room walls with a couple of fresh coats of white interior paint. Before I prepared the area, I needed to reorganise and place some items in storage. Here are my tips on the best affordable storage containers for decluttering and renovating in the current Australian market:

These black plastic containers from Target are okay for long term storage. You just need to remember to add a label so you know what’s in them. I find them good for books and clothes you no longer need (due to weather or size change), but you still want the fabric to be protected from light damage. The other good thing about these containers is the lid snaps shut to keep out spiders and dust. I like the 30-litre size for stacking and it makes a single box not too heavy for lifting.
These bucket like plastic containers can be harder to find. They are 15 Litres. I like the blue and blacks ones. They might ruin your shelf, but I find them good for linens, medical supplies and backup toilet paper.

These Kmart storage boxes can be found in the kid’s arts and craft section. I add in black felt pen the name of the contents to the side, so I know what it is in it. They are great if you are stuck on a DIY or craft project and want to keep all of the components together. These are gender-neutral, so they could easily work in a male or garage space.
These 3-litre clear Decor containers are usually used for food, but I like to store craft materials and small linens in mine. Although you can usually see the contents, I like to add a cute label for other members of the household. These can be purchased from Woolworths and Coles, but I like to wait until they are half price.

These gift boxes can be found at various discount shops. They just have a pretty Aussie flower-themed pattern. They come in various shapes and sizes, you might need to make a couple of trips to get matching ones in the right size. I prefer rectangle shapes for ease of stacking. The round boxes work best for the very top of bookshelves.

Loved the ideas !! Only concern is that once we empty the contents from a packet to a container, it becomes difficult to know the expiry date in future… It would be great if we had a tip for that
It’s a good question. I haven’t done my kitchen cupboards, so I’m not sure what the answer is. Also, I wouldn’t place food in plastic storage containers for a long time – I’d prefer glass containers.
